How IPL Hair Removal Works

The machine works by using intense pulses of light that are targeted through a light piece onto the skin. As the pulse of light energy hits the hair, the colour within the hair absorbs the light energy, turning it into heat. This heat radiates down the hair shaft and kills the follicle at its base.

IPL technology has been proven to achieve a permanent reduction in the number of regrowing hairs following each IPL treatment in most skin types. The number of laser treatments required depends on several factors relating to your specific kind of hair and skin. A customised treatment programme will be designed for you, along with an estimate of how many treatments you may need to achive permanent hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Prior to IPL laser treatment for hair removal a thin layer of cold gel is applied to the area. The patient will be asked to wear dark glasses to protect the eyes. The IPL hand piece is then applied to your skin and pulses of light disable your unwanted hair. The gel is then removed, the skin cooled and any remaining hair will fall out in the next week or two.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

There is a degree of pain; it feels like the snap of a rubber band on your skin. The upper lip and bikini area is generally the most sensitive. No local analgesia is required and most people tolerate the treatment very well.

Are there side effects of Laser Hair Removal?

Side effects are rare, you may experience some reddening or local swelling at the treatment site, but this generally goes away within hours. On rare occasions some blistering or bruising may occur, but this typically resolves quickly. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimise risk of after effects. You can return to work and resume all activities immediately.
